Check with the local news for current travel advisories and any requirements or stipulations for indoor activities. Also, research open attractions and road conditions as mountain passes sometimes close around Union Gap.
As my kids have gotten older, 24-hour road trips have become our jam! We balance sports teams, work schedules, and school, so quick work road trips work out great for our family! While we have explored our side of Washington state, we haven’t explored the middle of the state very much. And to time our trip with fall festivals, I mean, you couldn’t ask for better timing!!

Madd Hatters Haunt
This is what Kylie was the most excited about! The year for 2021 the theme is the Ringmaster’s Circus. The haunt has a vintage vibe and lots of oddities and clowns – and SCARY clowns!! Plus, in the large waiting area, you can hang out in or anywhere on the grounds once you get your ticket number! This opened on the 15th of October, so if you are planning your trip, check the calendar out! The Joker was her BFF and she loved the whole night.

Central Washington Agricultural Museum:
Now, we timed this right with our trip, and we were able to hit the Agri-Copia event!! There are horse-drawn wagon rides, an excavator kids can drive, and tractor games! The girls loved to watch the mini horses and were fascinated by the huge and powerful draft horses.
We also explored the 17-acre museum! The museum is free of charge, although donations are certainly appreciated. We visited two of the exhibits – the Carriage Room and one of the cabins. We had toured a ghost town a couple of years ago and it was fun to see a cabin staged as if someone was actually living in them. The museum has a ton of old tools, farm machinery, and memorabilia to explore. A real treasure trove of the importance of agriculture in central Washington.

Pioneer Graveyard:
This is one of the oldest graveyards in Washington state! We stopped by here and the girls were fascinated to see the headstones to realize how far back in time the graveyard goes. In 2014 there was a huge community effort to clean up and preserve this piece of history! It is very well maintained and is a must stop for anyone who enjoys visiting cemeteries.

Fruit City:
Now if you’re like me and selecting your own produce isn’t your favorite pastime, you can head to seasonal fruit stands like Fruit City and they do the work for you! Plus, you get some great deals and you’re supporting the local farmers. In a quick review of their social media, I saw that Fruit City receives numerous comments that they have the best quality fruits and vegetables – and I couldn’t agree more. They are open 7 days a week until the end of October and have a huge selection of fruits and vegetables, plus local spices, jams and they even make their own kettle corn.

Skateland
While Skatekland in Union Gap is open year-round, they go all out for the fall season! The year I was there they had a live version of the game Clue where you had to find Clues to know who done it. It is the perfect place for kids to adults to skate at the indoor roller skate rink. For me, it was a lot of nostalgia for my days in the Boy’s and Girl’s Club skating; they even have slush puppies!
